Inspired by the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Drawn To Discover created the curriculum Drawn To Peace. As we celebrate the life of Dr. King on his birthday, it is a reminder of the need to teach peace to children and to empower them to spread kindness and positivity through their choices and actions. Drawn To Discover takes up this mantle by teaching children about great people and moments in history with a focus on peace and prosperity rather than a frequent topic of history, war.
Wendy Anderson Halperin, co-founder of Drawn To Discover, was spurred to action with a realization she made at an education conference. As Wendy recalled,
“I had an epiphany at an education conference once. Listening to a speaker share the way we teach history in school, it became clear that the vast majority of the content we teach to our children is conflict and war. I realized then and there that, as a society and an education system, we need to study more PEACE. We need to promote learning to compromise and create peace even more importantly than war and conflict. I decided to make that my goal.”
Wendy and the Drawn To Discover team were motivated by this epiphany and by author Corman McCarthy’s comment,
“If peace is what every government says it seeks, and peace is the yearning of every heart, why aren’t we studying it and teaching it in schools? I would rather teach peace than war!”
Our mission is to do just that – teach peace, compassion, and positivity through fun and engaging lessons for children. This themes are woven throughout our entire curriculum and especially emphasized with Drawn To Peace. These lessons illuminate famous quotes and actions of historical figures focused on peace and goodwill. For example, one lesson focuses on King’s very important distinction that, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
As we commemorate Dr. King’s life and mission, we hope that we can offer a small contribution to his dream. We hope you and your children will join us as well!
